Functional value
The value of the result.
Meaning value
The value created because a human performed the act.
These are not the same quantity. Automation can take the first without extinguishing the second.
Meaning Reservation

Meaning Reservation is a possible concept, not a doctrine. Capture is not required. A meaning can remain local.

Explanation can be generated. Being taught by someone who is responsible can remain the point.

A ritual can be performed correctly by a machine. The meaning may still require a human as the actor.
Consequential decisions
A recommendation can be complete. Responsibility for the decision can remain human.
Expressions of trust
A message can be composed. The fact that a person chose to send it can be the value.

- Gates describes paid caregivers who understood his father after speech failed, and writes that something in that care was irreplaceably human.
- He uses the example of a robot giving news of an incurable disease: there may be no technical reason it could not; he argues it should not.
- He analogizes Human Reserved to a nature reserve: a place that could be developed, withheld because the loss would be too great.
INTERPRETATION
- Meaning Reservation names a possible condition: function can leave an activity while human participation remains the site of meaning.
- This is not a claim that care, teaching, or ceremony must legally remain human. They are coordinates for seeing the distinction.
